Virgin Mary Statue Polychromed wood XIX Cent Maltese? Cap I Pota Talla Vestidera

Description

Spain or Malta, Early XIX Century.

Venerated polychromed wood processional statue of “Our Lady of Sorrows” with a deeply emotional expression of sorrow while praying to Our Father up above. Provided by the delicate factions of the face, pretty glass eyes, an open mouth with tiny teeth and a thin and long nose.

It presents a rare iconography, with intertwined hands and large wide body. Included with the black velvet and silk dress with mantle and lace showing an enormous Maltese Cross (Knights of Saint John emblem). The base retains traces of gold leaf.

These are called “Cap I Pota” in the northeast of Spain, part of a wider classification under “talla de vestir”, meaning “statue for clothes”.
