Unique Victorian mourning white hair locket brooch XIX C. & Photograph old man

Unique Victorian mourning white hair locket brooch XIX C. & Photograph old man

Victorian mourning locket from the XIX Century, in the guise of relics, with a strand of white hair beautifully arranged from the person of whom there is an antique photograph at the reverse, a mature man with a hard expresion.

Hair artistry arises from multiple motivations, many of which inherently sentimental, but it has not always been related to mourning. Between the 1500s and the early 1900s, similar works ranged from romantic memories of the loved one to family memories and sometimes were considered souvenirs of an important moment in someone’s life. Hair was often collected by several living members of the family and braided together to form a family tree. Some were crafted by professional artists and were, of course, quite expensive.

Excellent overall condition. Wear and tear consistent with their age.
