Saint John of the cross vision iconography

Saint John of the Cross wearing the carmelite cloak is represented here in serene ecstasy while standing before the famous vision he had in the convent of Segovia, Spain, in which he dialogues with Jesus Christ on his way to Calvary, that's why Christ apears with the burden of the cross.

At the bottom we can see an angel holding a burning heart, symbol of the burning passion of Saint John for Christ, and a scroll with the inscription in latin: "pati et contemni orate" which translates to: "suffer undervalued and pray".

This inscription refers to part of the vision when Christ asks him: "Ioannes, quid vis pro laboribus?" (Juan, what do you want for your work for me?) To which the saint replies "Domine pati et contemni pro te" (Lord, suffer and be despised for you).
