Huge 125 x 95 Oil Painting on Wood St Georges slaying the Dragon, Germany signed
Impressive, large and beautifully executed.
Signed: "Hoder"
Dated: 1954
Inspired by older examples such as XV Century Rogier van der Weyden's "Saint George and the Dragon" c. 1432/1435.
This unique mid XX century piece does not leave the viewer indifferent, it brings him closer to the action by placing in the foreground an oversized Saint George represented as protector of the city of Kaufbeuren (Germany) destroying evil (dragon) at its gates, while horsemen run for cover.
At the right corner we can see a monkey pointing out to the city on top of the city's coat of arms.
City of Kaufbeuren engraving (1720) used for background, digital copy in the photo section above.
Most likely work ordered by an official and meant for a governmental building or church of the city. Ready to be hanged.
