Exquisite Spanish silver reliquary pendant from the 17th Century, containing two high quality miniature paintings depicting, on one side, The Christ of the Passion (Sevilla) holding the cross and, on the other side, The Blessed Virgin Mary and Child (Virgen del Sagrario).

This beautiful and unique double glass face reliquary pendant is encased in solid silver and its 2 oil on copper miniature paintings are characterized by the dark tenebrism style typical from the Spanish religious art of the XVII Century. The painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary and child (Virgen del Sagrario) shows the pearly white cap typical of this representation. On the other side, the popular Christ of the Passion of Sevilla is here as commonly depicted with great expression of suffering, covered in blood with a golden embroidery dress and crowned.

History of the “Virgen del Sagrario”

The Virgin of the Sagrario is a Romanesque carving that was covered in silver in the 13th century and later dressed in a cloak studded with pearls that was lost in the Spanish Civil War.
According to a legend, the image belonged to the Apostles and was brought to Toledo by Saint Eugene. The fact that it was hidden during the Muslim era and later restored by King Alfonso VI when he conquered the city also enters the legend.
She received the title of Virgin of the Tabernacle, for being preserved in the famous sacred place called “Sacrarium”, where the relics of the saints and the most valuable sacred vessels were kept, and where the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist was reserved. It was then placed outside the tabernacle, in a niche above the door, and this is how it was at the beginning of the 16th century. Since then, all the kings of Spain have visited and venerated it.
