Silver Reliquary 19th Cent. 1st Class Relic St. Francis of Jerome
This exquisite 19th-century Italian reliquary features a First-Class relic of Saint Francis de Geronimo inside a silver reliquary medallion. The relic is placed on a delicate miniature painting on paper depicting the saint, a Jesuit priest canonized in 1839. The reverse adds further symbolic richness: it bears a painted image of two flaming hearts—emblems of fervent devotion—alongside the Christogram IHS (Iesus Hominum Salvator, “Jesus, Savior of Humankind”), reinforcing its role as both a work of art and a tool of prayerful contemplation.
First-Class relics consist of fragments of the saint’s physical remains, considered the most sacred type of relic in Catholic tradition. Such relics were venerated for their direct connection to the holy person and were believed to embody their spiritual presence and intercessory power. The medallion would have served as a personal devotional object, uniting craftsmanship, piety, and the Jesuit tradition of fostering intimate bonds between the faithful and their saints.
