Reliquary "Last Supper of Jesus Christ" Enamel Porcelain Painting XVIII Century

Reliquary "Last Supper of Jesus Christ" Enamel Porcelain Painting XVIII Century

Exceptionally beautiful little French reliquary in polychromed enamel on oval porcelain from the mid 18th century, in a brass frame.

Such an intricate technique was involved in creating enamel on porcelain items including many firings with volatile vitreous materials. However, it was well worth the end result as enamels are permanent, they will never fade.

This reliquary depicts the moment Jesus took the bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, giving it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.” A pivotal scene of the story of Christianity represented throughout the centuries in master's paintings and altar pieces.

The back is protected by a thick silk embroidery with roses.
