Reliquary description

Reliquary made in the parish church of Ars, France. It is a Monk´s work done when the Saint was in the process of canonization and was only venerable at the time, making this piece even rarer.

It contains 3 important relics of the Cure of Ars, one white hair, a bit of his blood and large cuts of his clothes in shape of a cross and a flower where the other 2 relics rest on top, this Holly material is placed on a blue silk (color of the Blessed Virgin Mary) background with photos of himself on the top left, the virgin Mary on the top right and the church of Ars at the bottom, creating an illusion of the burial grounds where he used to rest.

Most importantly, at the back we find the official document and wax seals of the postulator of the cause for canonization of Venerable Jean-Marie-Baptiste Vianney, Anthelme Martin M. P. Post, holding the red silk threads together ensuring its security.

English translation of the certificate goes as follows:

“Beatificationis et canonizationis de S. D. Joannis Maria Baptiste Vianney, parochiae vulga dictae Ars pastoris, in hac theca, bene clausa, collocatam esse particulam ex capillis, ex sanguine et ex indumentis ejusdem S. D. quam serico funiculo, rubri coloris, meoque sigillo muninri, in quorum fidem

Datum, in supradicta parochia die 18.

Anthelmus martin m. p. Post”

“Of the beatification and canonization of S. D. John Baptist Mary Vianney, the common pastor of the Ars parish, in this well-closed case, it has been placed a small piece of hair, blood, and clothing of the same S. D. (John Baptist Mary Vianney), which it was fortified with a line of silk, of red color, and with my seal.

In whose faith it was given, in the above-named parish on the 18th day.

(Signed) Anthelmus Martin, m. p. Post”
