Reliquary 18th C. German Carved Crucifix with Collection of Relics

Beautiful German reliquary crucifix dating from the 18th century, intricately hand-carved from wood. The front displays a finely detailed depiction of the crucified Christ, with additional Passion symbols such as the rooster and column carved in high relief. The reverse side reveals a hidden compartment which houses sacred relics, delicately wrapped in silk and secured with ornate metal thread, monastic origin.
This devotional object served both as a visual meditation on Christ’s Passion and as a container for holy relics, giving it a unique dual function in Christian worship and private devotion.
This type of crucifix is closely linked to the rich tradition of Bavarian folk art, where religious devotion was often expressed through finely carved wooden objects. These crucifixes were commonly crafted by rural artisans and monks in the Alpine regions, particularly in Bavaria and Tyrol, and were used in private chapels or as part of domestic altars. Good condition. Minor signs of age and wear consistent with its age. No breaks or structural damage. The relic compartment and inner elements are well preserved with beautiful patina.
