Painting Oil on Wood Angels in Prayer. Altar Tabernacle Doors Germany 19th Cent

A double winged pointed arch altar door in Neo-Gothic style, made of oak wood with gilt and iron fittings shaped as branches and leaves, Germany, 19th century.

Each wing of the door has painted, oil on wood, an exquisite representation of a heavenly angel in adoration, kneeling and praying. The angels are robed in red and blue and are kneeling on a cloud, their wings outstretched up high. Each angel is painted against a gilt backdrop representing the divinity of the heavens, following the byzantine tradition. Which expanded throughout Europe in medieval times, as seen in icons everywhere, and is much present nowadays in all countries that processes the Christian Orthodox faith.

When the wings are open, both angels are at both sides of the altar in the tradition adoration of the eucharist pose.

The Eucharist, or Holy Communion is one of the most sacred rituals of Christianity and Catholicism in particular in which the body and blood of Christ is consumed (figuratively or literally depending on denomination) and “adoration” – prayer or contemplation is practiced. It is a common motif to portray angels in adoration as an emphasis on the holiness of the Eucharist.
