Oil Painting Virgin Mary Madonna with Jesus Gothic in Oak Frame, 19th Cent

Hand carved Gothic picture frame made of oak wood containing a large oil on canvas painting of the Madonna with Child, Germany or Russia, 19th century.

The frame is shaped to resemble a church facade, or altar. Spiraling columns on both sides and a horizontal carved foliage element as a base hold up the top which is comprised of 2 spires and a steeple with delicately carved finials. The gothic or ogival arch of the steeple is centered by a four lobe rose meant to invoke the cross surrounded by pierced ornamentation shaped as leaved or drops. The top side of the arch is decorated with a foliage motif.

The painting, heavily influenced by Russian icons depicts the Virgin Mary, in red and blue robes, looking towards the heavens and holding the infant Jesus in her arms. The infant Christ is holding on to Mary’s head cover with his left arm and holding a cross in the other and looking directly at the viewer. Both have a golden halo around their heads a symbol of their divinity.

Paintings of this kind are a common occurrence in Eastern European Christianity and are often accompanied with silver and gilt ornamentation and are collectively called “icons”. They can be found in a variety of styles and shapes and are meant to be placed in the home for worship and so the holy spirit is ever present.
