Oil on Canvas Painting "Christ on the cross" by Etienne Auguste KRIER 1875-1953

Oil on Canvas Painting "Christ on the cross" by Etienne Auguste KRIER 1875-1953

Turn of the Century (Circa 1900) masterly executed portrayal of Christ on the cross by Etienne Auguste KRIER (1875-1953) France.  Signed: "E.A. Krier"

After "Christ Crucified" by Diego Velázquez. Ca. 1632 (See picture)

The power of this remarkable painting comes from its sheer simplicity. Christ’s body emerges from the impenetrable darkness, illuminated only by a bright light from above – thus forcing the viewer to focus upon Christ’s sacrifice. The scene is devoid of all almost all narrative details, only the barest hint of a sun setting almost gone is present, allegorical of Christ life reaching its end, where we are present at the very moment of His final breaths, as He cries out to His Father.

This dramatic tenebrism is deliberately austere and emotionally powerful - intended to shock the senses and stir the soul of the faithful.
