Holy Icon Joy of All Who Suffer + St George… Tempera Painting, Russia, 19th Cent

  • Egg tempera on wood, Russia

19th Century

  • Brass small travel icon

18th Century

This exquisite, interesting and popular icon shows in detail the iconography made following the strict cannons of Russian Sacred art.

Represented here are 3 important Saint of the Orthodox Christendom and the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Saint George on the left,

A Saint king at the center

An Apostle on the right.

Joy of All Who Suffer

Above there is fitted an older, heavily used by the carrier, brass travel icon made in the 18th Century. Which gives meaning to the whole icon since it was crafted to be its recipient.

The unusual travel icon shows the iconography of the Joy of All Who Suffer, which shows the Blessed Virgin Mary surrounded by the believers praying for her and God father appearing between clouds blessing the whole scene.

This makes this unique icon rich in history and iconography and it has somewhat “hard to explain” divine aura. A rare collector item.

35x31 cm.

Extraordinary overall condition. Small crack at the top between the brass travel icon and the border.
