Ebonized Wood Figure Statue Virgin Mary with Christ Dutch 19th Cent

A 19th century wooden figure of the virgin Mary holding the infant Christ in her lap, signed K. V. Zundert by the artist who is most likely Dutch as Zundert is a Dutch city (K. Van Zundert - “from Zundert”).

The wood is darkened to resemble ebony wood in a technique involving soaking in tannin tea and then treating with acetate iron.

The Virgin Mary is depicted in traditional robes, her head tilted and looking adoringly at  her child.

The infant Christ is held in Mary’s lap standing atop an orbis terrarium – “world of the lands” symbolizing the earth and Christs dominion. His hands are extended in greeting and invitation.

The statuette stands on an oval wooden base lined with green fabric at its bottom to protect the counter or alter top upon which it stands.

Figure of this kind are a staple in the Christian faith, Catholicism in particular and are found all over the Christian world in various variations. They provide a focal point for worship and contemplation either in public religious establishments or one’s home.
