This exquisite, interesting and popular icon shows many faces and iconography made following the strict cannons of Russian Sacred art.
Represented here is the Dormition the Most Holy Lady Theotokos, which is the scene where the Blessed Virgin Mary, after been warned about her death in 3 days by the Archangel Gabriel, is transported by the Apostles to mount Golgotha to meet her Holy death. A crowded procession of believers and haters follows until she rests atop of the mount, as seen in the many faces all around the lower half of the icon.
The most important act in this scene is shown at the top half of the icon where the Lord Jesus Christ himself opens heaven and appears full of glory accompanied by angels (red Seraphin angel above him) and Saintly entities (Prophets on his sides) to receive the Holy soul of his mother; this Holy soul is represented here overed in funerary robes resting on the left arm of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The icon holds at the lower part an older brass travel icon from the 18th Century Russia showing Saint Modest, Saint Vlasij, Saint Nil, Saint Flor and Saint Lavr with Jesus Christ Blessing with a Bible from the heavens above. The travel icon shows much wear being done by all the people who used it in their prayers.
This makes this unique icon rich in history and iconography and it has somewhat “hard to explain” divine aura. A rare collector item.
-The oldest version of this icon on our days we find it in the Icon of the Dormition by Theophan the Greek, Circa1392 (14th Century) photos attached.-
