Antique Hand Crafted Peacock Box for storing pigments used in Hindu Rituals

This exquisite antique hand carved and hand painted wooden box presents a sacred Peacock in front of a shrine.

It was utilised for storing coloured pigments used in sacred Hindu ceremonies, such as the Holi Festival and weddings.

Mayura is a Sanskrit word for peacock, which is one of the sacred birds of the Hindu mythology. It is referred to in a number of Hindu scriptures.

We can appreciate the fine attention to detail and drama of the artist in this 19th Century polychromed and partially gilt peacock figurine.

There are two compartments inside where we can still see remainings of color pigments. This show us that this has been used during real ceremonies.

Condition
Its state is extraordinary. The wood has a beautiful patina due to its age.
