A biscuit porcelain interpretation of the Virgin with Child based upon the famous statue that stands over the remains of St. Aurelle in the Chapel of the Virgin at Notre Dame des Victoires in the 2nd arrondissemont of Paris. An unknown artist sculpted The Virgin with Child at Notre Dame des Victoires in the early 19th century to replace a statue that disappeared during the French Revolution. It became a popular pilgrimage destination and was crowned at the behest of Pope Pius IX in 1853. The beauty, popularity, and coronation of the statue prompted many artists to produce interpretations of the original.

This interpretation is lovely and includes much that is original. It will stand out in any collection. The features of the Virgin are softer than the original. Her cheeks are thinner: her nose and brow less aquiline. Her shawl does not cover her head completely in this interpretation, and the bangs of her hair are visible, which lends less enigma and more humanity to Mary. Her attention focuses on the child, which calls the viewer’s attention to the infant Christ. The Child, in this interpretation, is moving away from the Virgin, arms outstretched, toward a greater destiny.

There is a strange anomaly at the base of the biscuit porcelain in which the word “Victoires” appears misspelled to read “Viotoires.” This adds to the enigma of the piece, and one wonders if the artist is not trying to identify himself here. There is also blurry text painted inside the base which may have identified the artist once.
