Immaculate Conception, Spanish school. Late 17th Century – Early 18th Century, Oil on Board on Flemish wooden frame (later addition) 
An excellent painting for a collector in search of a Spanish-school, Baroque “Immaculate Conception.” The influence of the Spanish masters from the Golden Age lies heavy here. One can almost follow the footsteps of the artist through the streets, monasteries, and churches of Seville as he accumulates his thoughts for the piece from the masterpieces by Murillo, Velazquez, and Zubarán that lined the walls of that marvelous early-modern city.
The artist here follows Velazquez (and his appreciation for the dramatic lighting style of Caravaggio) in setting the scene of the Conception at night to better highlight Mary and display her holiness. The iconography is splendid: stars circle the Virgen’s head to signify her sainthood; cherubim manifest above to signify her connection to the heavens. Light seems emanate from her head signifying truth and blessing from Christ (who is the light of the world). Her golden shawl serves as a source for the glow and plays marvelously against the dark backdrop.
The Virgen’s visage and demeanor are deeply expressive. She looks down toward the place that will one day contain her Holy Child. The look is one of profound compassion, and there is a hint of lament, as if she envisions the moment many years hence when she must witness her Son on the cross. The craquelure gives her youthful visage a maturity and wisdom that exceeds her years. A fine piece indeed.
