18th Cent Cusco Colonial Painting Angel Arcabucero, Oil on Canvas + Glass Frame

SKU: 20241112_152007

An exemplar of an 18th-century ángel arcabucero (angel with arquebus) from the Cusco school of South America. These military angels were to represent the 2nd coming of Christ in power with hosts of angels.

The connoisseur will find, in this work, many hallmarks of the genre, including the mix of European and native symbolism. The angel has feminine characteristics but remains somewhat androgenous. The weapon is slender, lighter, and more delicate than a standard arquebus. The clothing style is European. However, one will notice distinct Amerindian elements. Note the use of bright colors, especially the plumes that adorn the angel’s hat, reminiscent of the parrots of South America, which signify nobility and religious authority.

This painting has much that is unique, however, and makes a fine addition to a collection as well as an exemplar of the genre. The frame is ornate, composed of mirrors and gilt, and worthy of considerable attention. The craquelure adds a solemnity and maturity to the piece that contrasts wonderfully with the angel’s youth. Colorful makeup highlights the angel’s cheeks as she tilts her head slightly and gives her audience a side glance that exudes both confidence and innocence. Unlike many of the Angels with Arquebuses, this angel does not hold the weapon in a posture from the manual “Exercise in Arms” by the Dutchman Jacques de Gheyn. Yet the posture is realistic, and she handles the weapon as a left-handed person would, which may provide a clue to the identity of the artist.
